Day 3: Harvest
August 10, 2022
We have established the playing field, defined our boundaries and sharpened our tools, and so the final day will focus on how to reap the benefits. Using sustainability as a topic, the day’s technical panel will demonstrate best practices and different approaches to conducting interviews. A close look at the various data resources available to writers, and a discussion of how best to wield data while pitching, will demystify an oft-intimidating field. A closing keynote will conclude the 2022 Symposium, presenting an unflinching assessment of the current state of wine writing, while highlighting areas of hope and inspiration.

8:15am-9:30am Pacific | The Art of the Interview – Exploring Sustainability
Julia van der Vink, Elin McCoy, Stacy Briscoe, moderated by Michelle Bouffard
During this session, we dive into what makes a good interview in real time, enlisting an expert on the subject of sustainability and moderating a discussion between writers and this “source.”
9:45am-11:00am Pacific | Writers’ Roundtable: Finding the Story in the Data
Andrew Adams, Erica Duecy, moderated by Kelli White
After walking attendees through a variety of data sources, this panel will explore the features of the major options, whether or not data can ever be “neutral,” the difference between raw and interpreted data, as well as how to evaluate funding sources and agendas behind research. Panelists will discuss crafting pitches based on specific data, as well as engage the audience for pitches.
